How it began

The absence of a professional association of special ists creating Internet resources that would assist in personal growth of its every participant pushed Alexei Dudinov, the director of "Webmastera.ru” studio, to the idea of Webmaster’s Union of Russia foundation in spring 2003 and hold a festival of noncommercial Internet projects.

His close associate and him began to actively promote the idea. Aims and objectives of the organization to-be were discussed on the Internet forums. Thus, operation of the Union began off the cuff.

In 2004 Webmaster’s Union of Russia organized and carried out a number of conferences, sport and cultural events that popularized informational technologies, including several workshops on creation and promotion of noncommercial web-sites in the Internet.

I Festival of Noncommercial Youth Internet Projects and the first “Youth-Internet-State” Internet Conference that took place in January, 2004 in the building of the Federation Council in Moscow.

The Union came out as a partner of the Third international exhibition “Youth. Rest and leisure time” and of many other socially valuable events. The Chairman of board of Union Alexei Dudinov was the only representative on behalf of public organizations in working group of the Federation Council on development of laws regulating the Internet in Russia.
In May 2004 Webmaster’s union of Russia established the grant programme for the social projects support and began to render assistance to many of them. Together with the municipal authority of "Veshnyaki” district of Moscow in September 2004 the Union founded civic youth center "Activ” and took its administration and a part of its activities expenditures.

II Festival of non-profit Internet Projects that obtained the international status.

The "Internet-Extreme" event where Russia’s record was made – Europe’s most high altitude web-translation at the height of 5350m.

The "Internet-Extreme" event included else auto rally Moscow – Bordeaux – Milan – Kiev – Moscow with online web-translations were conducted.

Together with Russian Youth Association several poetic contests were held followed by books of poems released by the Webmaster’s Union of Russia Publishers.

In 2005 Webmaster's Union of Russsia became a nominee of Russian National Awards for contribution to development of Russian segment of the Internet (Runet Awards - 2005) for its activities».

The final program of III International festival of noncommercial Internet-projects involved a significant event, that is the 10th Russian Internet Forum (RIF). In cooperation with RIF organizers Webmaster's Union of Russia conducted "Days of Regions of Russia" where RIF-marathon through Russian regions was started.

Within the three years about 100 000 people from 70 countries participated in the events of the Festival that attracted attention of the general public and the government to noncommercial socially significant Internet-projects.

A great number of new contests that give a notable consideration to noncommercial Internet resources appeared in Russia in 2004-2005. For the purpose of the Internet community integration the International Festival of Noncommercial Internet Projects became a part of national "Runet Prize". In April 2006, the rights for its holding were delegated by Webmaster’s Union of Russia to ROCIT that is acting as the Prize secretariat.

At the regular meeting of Webmaster’s Union of Russia On June, 23rd, 2006 they mentioned the success in meeting the earlier distinguished aims of drawing public and official attention to non-profit Internet. Therefore it was decided to direct the organization at new aims, that had been announced at organization’s foundation, these are facultative certification in IT area, the extension of network of foreign and Russian Webmaster’s Union of Russia agencies and also the extension of business activities in the Internet technologies area including development of the international business cooperation through the Internet.
